When an engagement session goes like theirs did (which can be seen ::here:: ), you know their wedding will be just as awesome…
Then, you get a text from a VERY concerned bride….. Her venue burned down and she was on the hunt for a new location. She was lucky enough to find another great option at Saint Clements Castle in Portland, Ct. The Marina building to be exact, down on the river, the views, the possibilities…. And here came her wedding day, so excited. And upon pulling into the Marina. It started pouring. hard. And during the ceremony, it started raining hard. And during the reception. Yup… Rain.
You may be asking why I’m talking about all this non-sense about their day. And well, it wasn’t nonsense, it was their day. The way it was unfolding, their day…. And the other reason I’m talking about it is for one simple reason…. Because NOT ONCE did I hear either of them complain. They took each moment for what it was and embraced it and that alone, has the power to make a wedding day awesome! Though in all honesty it was also the hardest part of the day. “Navigating the inevitable ups and downs that come with planning; although we had a little more than we bargained for!! And the seating chart; seating charts are stressful!”
That and the entire Mondo pizza that the bride and her brides maids devoured. That was actually her bridal confession. While I don’t normally share them public with the specific wedding, I couldn’t resist with this one. “My bridesmaids and I were demolishing a Mondo’s Pizza about an hour before ceremony time. And I believe we have the photos to prove it :)” And yes! I have pics to prove it and they’re awesome. haha…
Anyway… Let’s rewind to 2007… That’s like forever ago!!! To be exact – “Summer of 2007. I was babysitting, relieving the daytime babysitter of her duties. Waleeds brother was friends with her, and was there. As soon as he saw me he said ‘You’d be perfect for my brother.’ The rest is history. We went on a blind date a week later- at the movie theater and saw ‘Oceans 13.’ We both agree that watching a movie is a horrible blind date idea. But apparently not that horrible! ;)”
And then let’s fast forward to an October evening – “It was my birthday. We were on our way to my birthday dinner at my favorite Thai restaurant, and he asked if I wanted to take a walk hill at Horsebarn Hill at UConn and watch the sunset. I was hungry but obliged because it was a beautiful October evening. As I’m taking sunset pics with my iPhone he acts like he has a rock in his shoe, very believably. I realize he’s taking a long time to stand back up. I glance over and realize he’s down on knee. We spent the next half hour sitting in tall grass, basking in beautiful light and watched the sun dip behind the Uconn campus.”
I guess the Thai food become secondary on this day because she obviously said yes.
It would be so incredibly easy to go on about their day. About all the dancing, the non-stop dancing. I could write an entire story on how, in the rain, these two were so willing to work with my thoughts and ideas. Walking thru the wet grass, over and thru the weeds and out onto the rocks that roll into the river for certain photos. Or how in the pouring rain, toward the end of the evening, these two were not only willing to pose with out an umbrella but said “let’s keep shooting, these photos mean the world”….. For all they knew I could have been taking selfies. haha… (But I wasn’t)…
In departing, I want to share the advice that Meagan wrote because she pretty much nailed it on the head: “The day won’t go exactly as you envisioned or planned; it may rain or the button that is bustling on your dress may pop off (hehe) but take a deep breath and cherish the moment you’re in together; because it goes by in a flash. The photos are all you have that’s tangible after your wedding day- so don’t take it lightly. Find someone that understands you as a couple; and captures the love the way you want to look back on It 50 years from now.”
